Spain advanced to the semifinals of the Euro 2024 quarterfinal on Friday at the Stuttgart Arena in Germany thanks to a late winner from Mikel Merino.

After falling down late in the second half to a goal by Florian Wirtz, La Roja reclaimed the lead in the 119th minute when Merino headed a cross from Dani Olmo into the goal. And moments later, the Spanish players collapsed to the ground in celebration of their victory as the referee sounded the full-time whistle.

Mikkel Merino is who?

After completing the youth academy at Osasuna, Merino began his professional club football career with the La Liga team, playing 63 games for the first team. Later, he relocated to play for Newcastle United in the Premier League and Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga.

Since 2014, Merino has played for his nation’s young teams, representing the under-19 and under-21 divisions under coach Luis De La Fuente, who subsequently assumed leadership of the senior squad.

In August 2020, he was called up for the first time to the senior team, and on September 12, 2023, he scored his first goal for the country in a 6-0 victory over Cyprus in the UEFA Euro 2024 qualifying round.

He started the final Group stage encounter against Albania at the European Championship this year after coming off the bench in Spain’s opening two Group E matches against Italy and Croatia.

He placed second in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games and won the under-19 and under-21 European Championships in 2015 and 2019, respectively.
